5G
What is 5G?
Fifth generation wireless technology (5G) is the latest iteration for cellular data networks. Engineered to increase speed and responsiveness, it will allow every person, object and device to be connected virtually.
Image
BENEFITS
What is the benefit of having 5G vs 4G?
Waiting will be a thing of the past... 5G lets you experience the entertainment you love at record-breaking speeds! Stream and download music and movies far quicker than on a 4G network - even in crowded areas. FYI - You can download a HD video clip in just 3 seconds!
Greater 5G speeds and lower latency means more capacity for you to connect multiple devices to the Internet. With real-time connectivity, use of cloud-based and remote services can be intensified to achieve 'smart living'
Image
USAGE
What types of activities can I use 5G for?
Movies, gaming, music downloads and file sharing are more convenient and amplified with 5G. If you have a large home in which many different devices must be connected, 5G promises a seamless and uninterrupted experience on each device.
5G is around 10 times faster than 4G! Given enough spectrum, it will work at average speeds of 150-200Mbps, and peak speeds will reach above 1Gbps. This means you’ll be able to download a full HD film in around 3 minutes (compared to over 15 minutes on 4G).
5G works at average speeds of 150-200Mbps, while 4G works at average speeds of only 23-35Mbps.
By default, 5G will reach peak speeds higher than 1Gbps, but basic 4G works at a maximum speed of only 150Mbps, while 4G EVO (a later, faster version of 4G) can reach up to 500Mbps depending on device capability and the number of carriers deployed.
5G speeds can vary and depend on multiple factors: how far away you are from a mast, which spectrum is being used, and how many people around you are using 5G.
Movies, gaming or music downloads are more convenient and amplified with 5G. If you have many different devices to connect inside a large home, 5G supports your experience on each device so that it’s seamless and uninterrupted.
Browse our 5G deals online and check if you fall within a 5G coverage area. If your home is located within a 5G-supported area, please choose the contract you would like to sign up for.
Your SIM will be provisioned for 5G within 24 hours after you’ve activated a 5G contract with us. If you're using a 5G-compatible device in an area that doesn't have 5G coverage, it will automatically fall back to the Vodacom signal that's available there. Your 5G smartphone will then automatically reconnect to the 5G network once you're back in a 5G area.
You may still sign up for any of our 4G deals available. Also, please leave your details and we will contact you as soon as 5G becomes available in your area.
If you already own a 5G device, we’ll ensure that your SIM is provisioned for 5G within 24 hours after you’ve activated a Vodacom 5G contract. You just need to be in an area that has 5G coverage to be able to experience the 5G network.
Voice and SMS (outgoing) services will not be available on 5G. Our 5G data contracts should be able to receive SMSs. Data Sharing SIM will also not be available on the 5G data contracts.
5G is completely safe to use. We are committed to ensuring the safety of all our customers. Thanks to years of detailed scientific research, government legislation and international guidelines, we’re fully compliant with all national and international electromagnetic frequency regulations.

You can confirm the applicable rates for the destination you’re traveling to on the Vodacom Travel data bundle page, under how much does it cost. Should the country you’re travelling to not be on the drop-down list it means it’s a non-qualifying country and standard international roaming rates will apply.
