How do I activate roaming before I leave South Africa?
You must activate roaming before departure:
- Contract users: SMS “CRM” to 123, dial *135*130#, or activate via the VodaPay app under International Roaming.
- Prepaid users: Roaming is usually active by default, but dial *135*130# to confirm and view travel bundles.
What is the most affordable way to use data while traveling?
Activate a Vodacom Travel Data Bundle, which offers much lower rates than standard roaming. Bundles are available for regions like Europe, USA, and Africa via the VodaPay app or *135*130#.
Will I be charged for receiving SMSs while I am abroad?
No. Receiving SMSs is free while roaming. Charges only apply for sending SMSs or making/receiving calls, depending on the country you’re in.
What is “Africa Roaming” and which countries are included?
Africa Roaming offers discounted rates on Vodacom‑partner networks in countries such as the DRC, Lesotho, Mozambique, and Tanzania, making calls and data cheaper than standard international roaming.
How do I check the roaming rates for my destination?
Visit the Vodacom International Roaming page or use the VodaPay app. Enter your destination country and price plan to see detailed call, SMS, and data rates.
Can I use my local South Africa data bundles while roaming?
No. Local SA data bundles only work within South Africa. While abroad, usage is billed at roaming rates or deducted from an active Travel Data Bundle.
What should I do if my phone doesn’t connect to a network when I land?
If automatic connection fails:
- Go to Settings > Mobile Data > Network Selection.
- Turn Automatic off.
- Manually select a Vodacom‑partnered network from the list.
