What is GPRS, EDGE & 3G?

Enhanced data rates for GSM evolution is improvement on standard GSM networks that allow for data transfer. EDGE has been superseded by 3G and the faster speeds 3G is capable of. However EDGE remains relevant in South Africa as 3G coverage is available in the metropoles and cities, whilst EDGE coverage is extensive.

3G refers to the third generation of mobile telephony standards; simply put an evolution of the GSM networks that bring you mobile voice services. 3G networks enable mobile operators such as Vodacom to create voice and data products on the same network, thereby passing on savings to you. It furthermore allows for the convergence of voice and data service onto a single device - the cellular phone.
