  1. Ensure that your cellphone is compatible and can be used in the countries you travel to, as certain countries don't allow devices with 3-DES encryption, such as a BlackBerry device. Contact the relevant embassy for assistance in determining if your device will be allowed into the country you are visiting.

  2. Make sure you pack the correct plug adaptor necessary to charge your cellphone.

  3. Confirm your voice mailbox password before leaving by contacting Vodacom's dedicated Customer Contact Centre (082 111 / 082 1940 - free from a Vodacom cellphone) as you will not be able to retrieve messages if your voicemail password has not been changed from the default password of 1111.

  4. Take your cellphone user manual, PIN and PUK numbers with you when travelling.

When you arrive
Once International Roaming has been activated on your cellphone, you will only need to switch it off and turn it on once you have arrived at your destination to use it. On start-up, your cellphone will search and provide you with a choice of local networks to roam on.

In the event that local networks are not presented, consult your User Manual on how to search for networks manually. Once you have selected a network, you will receive a welcome SMS.

As a Vodacom Contract, Prepaid or Top Up customer, roaming on a Vodacom or Vodafone Partner Network will be a good choice. So make a note of the network which will offer you the lowest roaming rates.

Enjoy great rates, the widest coverage and value for money in almost any country around the world.

Receiving a call while roaming is not free!

Callers in SA must dial your number as usual e.g. 0827654321

Local callers in your destination country need to dial the international prefix first, which is +27, followed by the rest of your cellphone number. E.g. +27827654321.

While you are roaming, you will pay (at the applicable roaming rate), to receive all calls, even if the call originates from the country you are visiting.

The caller will also pay for the local leg of the call.

Remember: If you have forgotten to activate your unconditional diverts before leaving SA, simply dial **21*+278214 followed by the last 9 digits of your cellphone number to divert all incoming calls to your voicemail. You will then not be able to receive calls, but will still be able to make calls.

Retrieving Voicemail while roaming is not free!

To listen to Voicemail, dial +278214 followed by the last 9 digits of your cellphone number. Example: If your cellphone number is 0827654321 you would dial +2782 14 827654321

Dial 1 as soon as you hear your voicemail message

Enter your mailbox number, e.g.: +2782 14 827654321

Press 1

Enter your mailbox password

Remember: Voicemail retrieval while roaming is not free, and will be charged as a call back to South Africa each time. Also ensure that you have reset your mailbox password prior to leaving, to be able to retrieve your messages when travelling.

Recharging your airtime when roaming
If you are a Top Up or a Prepaid customer, make sure that you have taken enough airtime with you. You can load the airtime before you leave, or you can take vouchers from South Africa with you to recharge while you are abroad.

Recharging with an airtime recharge voucher while roaming
Dial *100*01*12-digit recharge voucher PIN number# from your Vodacom cellphone (R0.20 per 30 seconds). Example: *100*01*098765098765#

NOTE: If you are running out of airtime and airtime recharge vouchers, have a friend or family member in South Africa purchase an airtime recharge voucher, and SMS you the voucher PIN number.

Sending a 'Please Recharge Me' request
If you are running out of airtime and airtime recharge vouchers when you are travelling, you can send family or friends in South Africa a 'Please Recharge Me' request.
Simply dial *140*02*cellphone number of the person you are sending the request to# and then press the dial key.

They can either buy an airtime recharge voucher and SMS you the recharge PIN number, or they can directly transfer airtime to your account.

Note:

  • This service is available to Prepaid and Top Up customers.
  • Customers can send up to two 'Please Recharge Me' requests per day.
  • Please recharge me requests will be charged at the applicable roaming USSD rate of 20c per USSD transaction.

When you return
If you have activated unconditional diverts before leaving, remember to cancel call diverts on your return by dialling ##002# from your cellphone when you arrive back in South Africa to enable you to receive calls again when you are home.

If you have activated SMS Roamer, remember to deactivate it immediately upon your return to South Africa to enable you to use voice and data functionalities again. To deactivate SMS Roamer simply SMS 'ROAMOFF' to 123 (free SMS).
