How does Roaming work?Hints and Tips

Before departing on your trip, ensure that your cellphone is set up and that International Roaming is enabled.

How to make a call and send an SMS

  • To call a number in the country you are visiting (e.g., London to London) or an international number (e.g., London to South Africa): Dial the country code and area code, followed by the number e.g, +27115555555 or +442075555555.
  • To send an SMS in the country you are visiting (e.g., London to London) or to send an international SMS (e.g., London to South Africa): Enter the country code and area code, followed by the number e.g. +27821234567 or +447951234567.

How to receive a call and an SMS

  • Once International Roaming has been activated, you should be able to receive calls and SMSs. If you have activated SMS Roamer, you will only be able to receive SMSs as your voice capabilities will be temporarily disabled.
  • Unrecognisable calls and SMSs may be due to incorrect labeling of caller ID on your phone's saved contacts.

Diverting your calls before departure

  • You may wish to divert your calls to voicemail or a local landline in South Africa before you leave.
  • However, in the case where you have diverted your calls on no reply, not reachable or busy, it's possible that you will be charged for two international calls.
  • If you do not wish to receive any calls you will have to set up an unconditional divert on your cellphone.
  • Once you have left the country, you will be unable to set your diverts.

I want to make calls but not receive calls while roaming

Unconditional diverts allows all incoming calls to immediately go into your voicemail. This can be done as follows:
STEP 1:    Dial **21*08214 and the last nine digits of your cellphone number, followed by
               the # key
STEP 2:    Select the send / dial button
NOTE: If you are abroad and wish to activate your unconditional diverts, then
the number to dial is **21*+278214.

Please visit www.vodacom.co.za/services/travel/how_to_use.jsp for more divert options.

Setting up your voicemail

  • Change your default password from 1111 to a number you will remember easily.
  • You will be unable to access your voicemail messages while roaming if you have not changed your default password.

Retrieving messages while abroad

Your mailbox remains in use while roaming, unless you cancel the divert facility before you leave (refer to point 6).
NOTE: Retrieving your voicemail messages while roaming will be charged as an international call each time.

You can retrieve your voicemail messages as follows:
STEP 1:    Dial +278214 followed by the last nine digits of your cellphone number.
STEP 2:    Dial 1 as soon as you hear your voicemail message.
Example: If your cellphone number is 0827654321 you would
               - dial +2782 14 827654321
               - then dial 1
STEP 3: Enter your mailbox password

How to call Customer Care

You can call Vodacom Customer Care should you require assistance while traveling. On most foreign networks you should be able to dial 111 as you do at home, but should this not work, then dial +2782111.

Safety measures to take before leaving on your journey

  • Ensure that a PIN number has been activated on your cellphone to prevent fraudulent phone activity occurring.
  • Add an ICE (In Case of Emergency) number to your contact lists. If you're anywhere in Europe and involved in an accident, then paramedics, doctors, nurses and/or police can contact your next of kin. Simply add the contact "ICE" to your phone and enter the telephone number of your next of kin.
  • Always keep your phone and belongings in a safe place while travelling, especially in countries and areas you're unfamiliar with.
